Un estudio de la empresa McAffe dio a conocer sus resultados que la gran cantidad de mails de spam que circulan en nuestras bandejas de entradas o en nuestros filtros antispam, realizan una carga en los servidores de envíos, estos con la gran cantidad de mensajes que se envían, contaminan emitiendo partículas contaminadas a la atmosfera (CO2) el equivalente de 3.1 millones de automóviles.
Si consideramos que el 80% de spam es ignorado de nuestros mails, es una gran cifra lo que contamina el correo basura. Si esta energía que consume sus procesos del spam fueran energía para hogares, abastecería unos 2,4 millones de hogares al año, una energía igual a la de 33.000 millones de kilovatios por hora (KWh).
